Bodytox glutathione - what is it?

How do free radicals work? 

Free radicals are molecules with a missing unpaired electron which makes them unstable as they attack other cells to steal their electron, in the process damaging the cell by reducing its function.
Free radicals are created from either normal cell metabolism i.e. when cells use oxygen to generate energy, or from external toxin factors; smoking, air pollution, chemicals, Xrays and exposure to the suns UV rays. Higher exposure to these factors equals more free radicals being created.
At low concentrations, free radicals are important and beneficial to health however if free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to regulate them, then a condition known as oxidative stress ensues.

Oxidative stress - what is it?

Oxidative stress can make the body age quicker. It can damage tissues which over time can lead to a variety of diseases.
A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function. 

Glutathione is a tri-peptide consisting of amino acids glutamate, cysteine and glycine, which have an extra electron. Acting as an electron donor, it directly binds to the molecules with the missing electrons and neutralises them. Glutathione is one of the few nutrients that can neutralise the full spectrum of free radicals in the body.
Besides its antioxidant defence and free radical scavenging, glutathione regenerates other antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E.

Why do I need glutathione? 

The most obvious way to ensure that your body maintains optimum levels of glutathione is to limit exposure to external toxins, exercise regularly and get sufficient sleep. There are also dietary sources rich in glutathione however dietary food intake, along with many powders, capsule and tablet forms of glutathione supplements, are poorly absorbed by the body.

Selenium rich foods (chicken, fish, organ meats, cottage cheese, brown rice and Brazil nuts) are beneficial as selenium works by reactivating glutathione in the body. People with lower levels of glutathione are often selenium deficient.
